Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Heat-Treated, Carbon-Manganese-Silicon Steel
The A537 / SA537 standard, its full name is “Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Heat-Treated, Carbon-Manganese-Silicon Steel”, is intended use in the manufacture of fusion welded pressure vessels and structures.
The material under this specification is available in three classes. Class 1 steel is supplied in the normalised condition and the specification covers plates up to 100 mm (4 inches) in thickness.

Additional Properties - ASME SA20 / ASTM A20
The specifications ASTM A20 or ASME SA20 (Specification for General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels) contain a list of supplementary requirements which can be added to the basic A537 / SA537 specification when additional control, testing, or examination is required to meet end use requirements.
These supplementary requirements, there are seventeen of them, are designated numbers (S1, S2, S3, and so on) and cover things like ultrasonic testing (S8, S11 or S12 depending on the type of ultrasonic test), charpy v-notch impact tests (S5), and product chemical analysis (S2).
As a matter of course, and in order to provide the best possible service to our customers, Brown McFarlane stocks ASME SA537 Class 1 and ASTM A537 Class 1 plates with numerous supplementary requirements included at the time of manufacture and all noted on the material test certificate supplied with each plate.

Notes: A - heat analysis, B - product analysis, C - Manganese may exceed 1.35% on heat analysis, up to a maximum of 1.60%, and Nickel may exceed 0.25% on heat analysis, up to a maximum of 0.50%, provided the heat analysis carbon equivalent (long formula) does not exceed 0.57%. When this option is exercised, the Manganese and Nickel contents on product analysis shall not exceed the heat analysis content by more than 0.12% and 0.03% respectively.
