New Brown McFarlane warehouse/office facility in Dubai
June 2010

The new Brown McFarlane warehouse and office facility in Dubai is now fully operational and open for business.

The 2000 m² covered warehouse is able to store around 10,000 tonnes of steel.

The carefully planned layout combined with two wide span 20 tonne overhead cranes allows rapid unloading and loading of trucks and greatly improved efficiency in material handling which allows us to provide the fast turn round of material that our customers want.

Price pressure on steel users
May 2010

A rapid series of price increases for reversing mill plate from Corus and other European steel manufacturers is creating cash management and supply problems for plate users both in distribution and fabrication.

The latest increase from Corus of £80 / tonne (€91, US$122) which is effective for all orders placed after April 23rd means that prices have risen by £200 / tonne (€228, US$306) in just 11 weeks as this link shows.

As distributors sell their products they must ensure that they fully take in to account the higher cost of replacing their stocks so the increases inevitably pass down the supply chain.

The problem of price is compounded by mill lead times extending significantly due to a combination of renewed market demand and the rebuilding of depleted inventories. This heaps more pressure on steel users.

At Brown McFarlane we are carefully monitoring our purchasing programme and stock levels to ensure that we remain in a position to provide a full range of specialist steel plate products at competitive rates. We look forward to working with our customers to make the current market conditions as manageable as possible.

BMcF helps sponsor Mongol Rally team
July 2008

John Harding and George Page are driving a Ford Transit ambulance on the Mongol Rally. The rally started in London, with the objective of driving to Mongolia in a vehicle that would then be donated to the local people. John and George, who were driving Rally cars for Ford many years ago, looked on this as not just a great experience but a way of raising money for Mercy Corps in Mongolia, as well as giving the Mongolian people a useful vehicle when they arrived there.

Mongol Rally
John & George's ambulance (Right-hand side) on the start line of the rally

After a very difficult start which involved rebuilding the engine twice, driving half way back in a taxi to get a new prop shaft from Germany, they have finally crossed the Mongolian border. In the process they have crossed Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Poland and Germany, a fantastic achievement for an old ambulance and 2 old men with a combined age of 137 years!! The trip has been totally financed by them and they have raised nearly £4000 for charities in Mongolia.

We are very pleased to have helped sponsor them.

Meet Our Glasgow Sales Team
May 2005

Brown McFarlane started in business in Glasgow over 115 Years ago, their small but very experienced Sales Team continue to service the requirements of Engineering in Scotland, Ireland and Northern England from this location.

Glasgow Sales Team
The Glasgow sales team, left to right Colin, John, Isobel, Millar, Stuart and Ian.

Ian Johnson who leads the team is well known to customers, for his understanding of their requirements and establishing the most cost effective solutions to them.

Colin Lindsay, Ian's deputy, has been with the business for over 20 years is a time served Engineer from the ship building industry. His expertise in Engineering Design was put to full use in the project to build a bulk storage hopper for a West of Ireland aluminium smelter. (See related article 'Design to Completion').

Millar Turner is also a qualified Engineer. Millar headed up one of our biggest projects the supply of a complete bridge weighing over 600 tonnes, this was profiled, machined, drilled, shot blasted and painted ready for welding and installation.

Stuart Kerr stated as an office junior and has progressed to be the Plate key accounts sales person. Stuart is involved in organising JIT deliveries to many of the major fabricators in the region.

John Straub has recently rejoined the business, after gaining a great deal of experience in the Middle East oil industry. A design engineer who learnt his skills at Motherwell Bridge, John is able to offer his skills to assist in the design of vessels and storage tanks.

Of course with a group of Engineers and Salesmen, administration is not always their strong point, they are fortunate that Isobel Moreland ably manages the coordination of their efforts.

The message from our sales team is we can engineer solutions for any of your plate requirements; we look forward to hearing from you.

Design to Completion - A Hopper in Ireland
May 2005

This project is an excellent example of how utilising our Engineering skills, processing facilities and project management ability we can provide a complete solution to the most complex fabrications.

Hopper

When Colin Lindsay of our Glasgow office was first given the drawings for the project, he immediately had to go back to his early training working in the design lofts of the ship building industry.

Engineers of today are used to relying on CAD software to solve problems, however the complex design of the hopper lining meant creating our own drawings.

The lining was manufactured from 400BHN wear plate, meaning that it would have been impossible to rectify error in drawing, cutting or bending on site.

The 250 tonne structure was assembled in a matter of weeks at the Aughinish Alumina plant at Foynes, near Limerick in the West of Ireland. Using our partners to bend, shot blast and paint, the completed structure was then craned in to place for the final welds to be completed.

Managing Director of the fabricator Foynes Engineering, Brendan O' Connor was delighted with the final result stating that without the expertise of BMcF and our subcontractors the project would have been much more difficult.

We are always looking for challenging and complex projects, so please contact us now to take advantage of the skills and knowledge we possess.
