South African Expansion |
| |
 |
After two years of successful trading in South Africa, Brown McFarlane has put down roots in the country by taking a substantial equity share in a steel service centre. The business is based in Richards Bay which has a large deep sea port with a regular service to and from the U.K. and the major north European ports. |
|
| |
|
| |
It is close to Durban, the main port of entry to South Africa, and the company has a sales and marketing office in Durban. Richards Bay is at the heart of a region that is experiencing rapid industrial growth and development. At the same time there is easy access to South Africa's industrial heartland around Johannesburg.
Trading as Brown McFarlane International, the new company will market the already well established range of high quality Western European pressure vessel steel plates across South Africa and in to the rest of the continent. As well as plate stockholding, Brown McFarlane International supplies cut to size items, and processing such as bending, and drilling. The warehouse also holds a complete range of mild steel products for general engineering and fabrication. |

Meet Our Glasgow Sales Team |
| |
 |
| The Glasgow sales team, left to right Colin, John, Isobel, Millar, Stuart and Ian. |
|
Brown McFarlane started in business in Glasgow over 115 Years ago, their small but very experienced Sales Team continue to service the requirements of Engineering in Scotland, Ireland and Northern England from this location. Ian Johnson who leads the team is well known to customers, for his understanding of their requirements and establishing the most cost effective solutions to them. |
|
| |
Colin Lindsay, Ian's deputy, has been with the business for over 20 years is a time served Engineer from the ship building industry. His expertise in Engineering Design was put to full use in the project to build a bulk storage hopper for a West of Ireland aluminium smelter. (See related article 'Design to Completion').
Millar Turner is also a qualified Engineer. Millar headed up one of our biggest projects the supply of a complete bridge weighing over 600 tonnes, this was profiled, machined, drilled, shot blasted and painted ready for welding and installation.
Stuart Kerr stated as an office junior and has progressed to be the Plate key accounts sales person. Stuart is involved in organising JIT deliveries to many of the major fabricators in the region.
John Straub has recently rejoined the business, after gaining a great deal of experience in the Middle East oil industry. A design engineer who learnt his skills at Motherwell Bridge, John is able to offer his skills to assist in the design of vessels and storage tanks.
Of course with a group of Engineers and Salesmen, administration is not always their strong point, they are fortunate that Isobel Moreland ably manages the coordination of their efforts.
The message from our sales team is we can engineer solutions for any of your plate requirements; we look forward to hearing from you. |

Design to Completion - A Hopper in Ireland |
| |
 |
This project is an excellent example of how utilising our Engineering skills, processing facilities and project management ability we can provide a complete solution to the most complex fabrications. When Colin Lindsay of our Glasgow office was first given the drawings for the project, he immediately had to go back to his early training working in the design lofts of the ship building industry. Engineers of today are used to relying on CAD software to solve problems, however the complex design of the hopper lining meant creating our own drawings. The lining was manufactured from 400BHN wear plate, meaning that it would have been impossible to rectify error in drawing, cutting or bending on site. |
|
| |
The 250 tonne structure was assembled in a matter of weeks at the Aughinish Alumina plant at Foynes, near Limerick in the West of Ireland. Using our partners to bend, shot blast and paint, the completed structure was then craned in to place for the final welds to be completed. Managing Director of the fabricator Foynes Engineering, Brendan O' Connor was delighted with the final result stating that without the expertise of BMcF and our subcontractors the project would have been much more difficult. We are always looking for challenging and complex projects, so please contact us now to take advantage of the skills and knowledge we possess. |

BMcF wins order for Portugals largest wind farm |
| |
As a primary sub contractor to Vestas Celtic Wind Technologies, BMcF have secured an order to supply all the processed steel plate for 26 steel towers for Enersis in Portugal. The order for 4500 tonnes of plate in qualities EN10025 355ML and J2G3 is being delivered to the Campbeltown, Scotland plant of Vestas over the next 3 months.
The Towers are supporting the new Vestas V90 turbine, each one capable of generating 3MW of Renewable Energy. The plate is being processed at our Stoke on Trent site and delivered on a JIT to Campbeltown. The plate was primarily manufactured in Corus plants in Scunthorpe and Motherwell, in sizes up to 13m x 3m and thickness up to 38mm. First deliveries are due to leave the Campbeltown docks by the end of November. This is the largest single order that BMcF have undertaken and demonstrates the resources available to tackle a project of this size over such a short period. |

Helping Manufacture Britain’s Renewable Energy |
| |
Providing Energy for Britain’s future |
| |
Over the last 12 months we have supplied many thousands of tonnes of processed plate for wind tower production to Vestas Celtic in Campbeltown, Scotland.
Much of this plate has been used to produce the Towers for the UK’s first two offshore wind farms at North Hoyle off the coast of North Wales (left) and Scroby Sands off Great Yarmouth.
North Hoyle stated producing power in November 2003 and when fully operational will produce enough power for 50000 homes. Scroby Sands Towers will be installed in the Spring and power is due to flow through to the grid by late Summer.
This contract required a demanding delivery schedule with plates profiled and complete with weld preparations to enable them to be rolled into cone sections ready for final assembly into Towers.
When viewed from the shore it is difficult to believe that the Towers weigh over 100 tonnes each and are over 50 meters high. |

Brown McFarlane helps with NATO's Defence forces |

BMcF have just completed the delivery of 80 trailer kits to RJD Engineering of Rotherham to be used for transporting Britain's main battlefield tank the Chieftain.
The main contract for these trailers was won by Market Harborough based King Trailers, specialists in heavy duty trailers.
The design of the trailer started some 5 years ago, working very closely with BMcF and Thyssen Krupp Stahl and Corus, it was decided to make use of 700 Yield steel throughout the trailer. By utilising this super strength steel considerable weight savings could be made in the trailer, so improving speed and economy of movement. The steel details can be found in our product range section - PAS 700 and RQT 701.
All the plate was profiled using our Oxygen Plasma profiling machines and supplied with fully machined weld preparations.
A complete kit of parts was delivered for each trailer fully identified and ready for final assembly, thus saving considerable time in fabrication and reducing inventory. |
