ASME SA516 Grade 60 / ASTM A516 Grade 60

There are large stocks of plates certified to ASTM A516 Gr. 60 and ASME SA516 Gr. 60 in Brown McFarlane’s warehouse facilities in the U.K., with logistical hubs in the U.A.E. (Dubai), and Singapore. A range of specially manufactured hydrogen induced crack resistant steel in SA / A516 Gr. 60 HIC is also available from stock. These steel grades have formed an important part of our product range for many years and we consider ourselves to be experts in supplying and processing them. Our sales engineers and purchasing staff are also able to answer technical questions. Please contact us and let us impress you with our understanding of your requirements.

The A516 / SA516 standard, its full name is “Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service”, is widely used by designers and engineers in many market sectors particularly outside of Europe. You may also see the following variations:

  • ASTM A516 Grade 60N or ASME SA516 Grade 60N (the “N” is added to show that the steel is normalised)
  • ASTM A516M or ASME SA516M (the “M” indicates that the material is certified in metric units)

We are also stockists of plates manufactured and certified to:

ASME SA516 Gr. 60 / ASTM A516 Gr. 60 - the specification

A516 / SA516 is a remarkably straightforward standard in its basic form with just five key chemical elements specified along with three mechanical properties.

Chemical Requirements

 Element  Thickness  Composition (%)  Note
 Carbon (max)  12.5 mm and under  0.21 A, B, C
   over 12.5 to 50 mm  0.23 A, B, C
   over 50 to 100 mm  0.25 A, B, C
   over 100 mm  0.27 A, B, C
 Manganese  12.5 mm and under  0.60 - 0.90 A, C, D
   12.5 mm and under  0.55 - 0.98 B, C, D
   over 12.5 mm  0.85 - 1.20 A, C
   over 12.5 mm  0.79 - 1.30 B, C
 Phosphorus (max)    0.025 A, B
 Sulphur (max)    0.025 A, B
 Silicon    0.15 - 0.40
     0.13 - 0.45 B

Notes: A - heat analysis, B - product analysis, C - For each reduction of 0.01% below the specified maximum for Carbon, an increase of 0.06% above the specified maximum for Managanese is permitted, up to a maximum of 1.50% by heat analysis and 1.60% by product analysis, D - Plates 12.5 mm and under may have 0.85 - 1.20% Manganese on heat analysis and 0.79 - 1.30% on product analysis.

Tensile Requirements

 Mechanical Property  Value
Tensile Strength, MPa (ksi)  415 - 550 (60 - 80)
Yield Strength, min MPa (ksi) 220 (32)
Elongation min, % 200 mm (8 in) 21
Elongation min, % 50 mm (2 in)  25

Additional Properties - ASME SA20 / ASTM A20

It is important to be aware of ASTM A20 or ASME SA20 (Specification for General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels). This specification outlines the testing and retesting methods and procedures, permissible variations in dimensions and mass, quality and repair of defects, marking, loading, and ordering information. It also contains a list of supplementary requirements which can be added to the basic A516 / SA516 specification when additional control, testing, or examination is required to meet end use requirements.

The supplementary requirements in A20 / SA20 are numbered (S1, S2, S3, and so on) and cover things like charpy v-notch impact tests (S5), product chemical analysis (S2), and simulated post weld heat treatment (S3).

As a matter of course, and in order to provide the best possible service to our customers, Brown McFarlane stocks ASTM A516 Gr. 60 and ASME SA516 Gr. 60 plates with numerous supplementary requirements included and all noted on the material test certificate supplied with each plate.

More information - comparable specifications

Although it is not uncommon to see this on steel company web sites, any suggestion that one steel specification and grade is an equivalent to another should be treated with caution especially because of differences in the methodology and techniques used for testing. However ASTM A516 Gr. 60 and ASME SA516 Gr. 60 are broadly similar to the following steel specifications:

EN 10028:3 P265               BS 1501 161 430

Plates certified to these standards are held in stock by Brown McFarlane.
