A wide range of steels is used throughout a nuclear power plant, falling into two main categories — each chosen for a specific, safety-critical role.

Carbon steels provide the primary structural work — the reactor pressure vessel and containment buildings — where strength and pressure integrity are paramount. Stainless steels are used wherever corrosion resistance is critical, such as piping, pumps, valves and storage tanks.
