More information

  • Brown McFarlane possesses…

Large stocks of boiler plates certified to ASTM A516 Gr. 60 and ASME SA516 Gr. 60 in our extensive warehouse facilities. We also stock a range of specially manufactured hydrogen induced crack resistant steel in SA / A516 Gr. 60 HIC..

For decades, SA 516 Gr 60 / A516 Gr 60 boiler plate steel has been at the heart of our product range. We’re not just suppliers, we’re experts in everything from sourcing and processing to the technical specifications of these products. Our engineers and procurement team have in-depth knowledge of this material, developed through years of experience across a range of industries. No matter how intricate your project or specific your requirements, they’re ready to answer your technical questions.

The A516 / SA516 standard full name “Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service”, is widely used by designers and engineers in many market sectors particularly outside of Europe. You may also see the following variations:

ASTM A516 Grade 60N or ASME SA516 Grade 60N (the “N” is added to show that the steel is normalised)

ASTM A516M or ASME SA516M (the “M” indicates that the material is certified in metric units)

Advantages of ASME SA516 Grade 60 / ASTM A516 Grade 60 Boiler Plate Steel

Our ASME SA516 Grade 60 / ASTM A516 Grade 60 Boiler Plate Steel offers a range of advantages for your project –

High tensile strength: Withstands immense pressure and stress, ideal for pressure vessels, boilers, and high-pressure equipment.

Exceptional yield strength: Resists deformation and maintains structural integrity under heavy loads.

Fatigue resistance: Endures repeated cycles of stress without compromising performance or safety.

Superior weldability: Joins seamlessly with various welding techniques, minimising fabrication time and costs.

Good formability: Bends and shapes easily to accommodate complex design requirements.

Machinability: Readily cuts and threads, simplifying fabrication processes and reducing waste.

As well as enhanced toughness and corrosion resistance, our range meets strict quality and safety regulations.

  • Additional Properties – ASME SA20 / ASTM A20

It is important to be aware of ASTM A20 or ASME SA20 (Specification for General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels). This specification outlines the testing and retesting methods and procedures, permissible variations in dimensions and mass, quality and repair of defects, marking, loading, and ordering information. This ensures consistent quality and reliability.

It also contains a list of supplementary requirements which can be added to the basic A516 / SA516 specification when additional control, testing, or examination is required to meet end use requirements.

The supplementary requirements in A20 / SA20 are numbered (S1, S2, S3, and so on) and cover things like charpy v-notch impact tests (S5), product chemical analysis (S2), and simulated post weld heat treatment (S3).

That’s why we stock SA 516 Gr 60 / A516 Gr 60 plates with a diverse range of supplementary requirements already included.

No need to navigate complex codes or worry about missing crucial tests. Every plate comes with a comprehensive material test certificate detailing its exact specifications, ensuring it’s perfectly matched to your project’s unique needs.

Contact us today and discover how our expertise in both SA516/ASTM A516 and SA20/ASTM A20 can elevate your project.

  • ASME SA516 Gr. 60 / ASTM A516 Gr. 60 Boiler Plate Specification

A516 / SA516 is a remarkably straightforward standard in its basic form with just five key chemical elements specified along with three mechanical properties that can be seen in the tables below this section. More information – comparable specifications

On other websites, any suggestion that one steel specification and grade is an equivalent to another should be treated with caution especially because of differences in the methodology and techniques used for testing.

However, ASTM A516 Gr. 60 and ASME SA516 Gr. 60 are broadly similar to the following steel specifications:

    EN 10028:3

    BS 1501 161 430
