A516 Steel | ASME SA516 & ASTM A516 Grade 65

More information

  • Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service

Plates certified to ASME SA516 Gr. 65 and ASTM A516 Gr. 65 are held in stock in Brown McFarlane’s stockholding and processing facilities in Stoke-on-Trent in the U.K. It is one of the largest stocks of these grades available anywhere. Also, available from stock is a range of SA / A516 Gr. 65 HIC which is a specially manufactured hydrogen induced crack resistant steel. These steel grades have always been at the core of our product portfolio and we are widely acknowledged as experts in supplying and processing them. The A516 / SA516 standard, its full name is “Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service”, is widely used by designers and engineers in many market sectors particularly outside of Europe. You may also see the following variations:
ASTM A516 Gr. 65N or ASME SA516 Gr. 65N – the “N” is added to show that the steel is normalised
ASTM A516M or ASME SA516M – the “M” indicates that the material is certified in metric units

  • ASME SA516 Gr. 65 / ASTM A516 Gr. 65 Specification

The chemical and mechanical requirements of A516 / SA516 are very simple and these are listed in the table below this section. Further complexity comes from additional supplementary requirements and end-user produced variations: needless to say, Brown McFarlane is able to supply Grade 65 plates that will meet the most stringent specifications.

  • ASME SA20 / ASTM A20

It is very rare that a requirement for plates specified to ASME SA516 Gr. 65 or ASTM A516 Gr. 65 not to also make reference to ASME SA20 or ASTM A20 (Specification for General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels). When additional control, testing, or examination is required to meet end use requirements, SA20 / A20 contains a list of supplementary requirements which can be added to the basic A516 / SA516 specification.

The supplementary requirements in A20 / SA20 are numbered (S1, S2, S3, and so on) and cover things like simulated post weld heat treatment (S3), product chemical analysis (S2), and charpy v-notch impact tests (S5).

In order to provide the best possible service to our customers, Brown McFarlane stocks ASME SA516 Gr. 65 and ASTM A516 Gr. 65 plates with numerous supplementary requirements which are added at the time of manufacture. These are all noted on the manufacturer’s material test certificate which is supplied with each plate.
