What is Weathering Steel?

Weathering steel, also known as CorTen Steel, has properties inhibiting atmospheric corrosion. When placed in suitable environments, surface treatment of steel is not needed as the “rust” extends the life cycle of the structure and creates a protective layer against the elements. The use of weather resistant steels has predominantly been seen in the structural engineering sector, with the steel being popular in bridge work applications. More recently, we have seen this material used in Intermodal Containers, Sheet Piling and Rail Wagons to name a few.

There has been an increase in the use of Weathering Steel Plate as an aesthetic material in both construction and design work. “The Angel of the North” remains the most recognisable exemplar of this genre, but smaller and more intimate public works of art are appearing across our townscapes with increasing regularity. This is due to the materials minimal maintenance demands and its subtle colour changes over time.

Weather Steel Grades We Stock

S355J2W

S355J2W is a weather-resistant structural steel with excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance and toughness. The “J2” indicates good impact performance at -20°C.

S355J2W+N

S355J2W+N is the normalised version of S355J2W. The +N denotes that the steel has been normalised to improve structural integrity, mechanical performance, and toughness.

S355K2W

S355K2W is a high toughness weathering steel designed for critical structures. The “K2” designation ensures impact toughness at -20°C with higher notch toughness than J2 grades.

S355K2W+N

This version of S355K2W is supplied in the normalised condition for improved performance in demanding structural applications. The enhanced ductility and toughness make it a preferred choice in safety-critical environments.

S355J5W+N

S355J5W+N offers even higher impact resistance than S355J2W and is ideal for harsh environments and load-bearing applications.

S355J0WP+AR

S355J0WP+AR is a hot-rolled weathering steel supplied in the “as rolled” condition. It’s commonly used in lighter structures where corrosion resistance and aesthetic patina development are priorities.

Why Choose Weathering Steel From Brown McFarlane?

Unlike traditional carbon steels, weathering steel does not require painting or protective coatings in appropriate environments. Thanks to its ability to develop a stable rust-like appearance after exposure to the elements, effectively creating a self protecting surface.
