Steel Plate for the Oil & Gas Industry
Despite navigating mature market cycles and fluctuating capital expenditure, the UK oil and gas industry remains at the forefront of global engineering innovation. With skills forged over four decades in the North Sea, the demand for high-integrity materials has never been more critical.
Budgetary and inventory constraints have shifted the burden to the supply chain. In this environment, unplanned shutdowns can result in millions of lost revenue. The ability to source a diverse range of certified steel grades, from impact-tested structural plate to advanced HIC steel plate, with minimal lead times, is now an operational advantage.
What Type of Steel is Used in the Oil and Gas Industry?
Engineers in the oil and gas sector face a complex matrix of material selection based on pressure, temperature and the presence of hydrogen sulphide. Below is a categorised breakdown of the critical steel specifications we supply to meet these diverse operational demands.
Structural & Offshore Grades
For projects requiring certified through-thickness properties to resist lamellar tearing, we stock an extensive range of steel plate for the oil & gas industry compliant with EN10225.
- Modern Standards – EN10225 G3+N, G8+N, and G10+N with Z35 through-thickness testing up to 100mm thickness.
- High-Strength Quenched & Tempered – EN10025 S690QL and S890QL for weight-saving fabrications where high yield strength is required.
Elevated Temperature & Pressure Vessel
Our portfolio includes the UK’s most comprehensive selection of pressure vessel and boiler plate, including alloy steel A387 Gr 11 plates and sheets.
- Chrome Moly Grades – ASME SA387 / A387 Gr 11, Gr 12, and Gr 22. These grades offer excellent oxidation and creep resistance in high-temperature hydrogen services.
Standard PVQ – ASME SA516 Grades 60, 65, 70; EN10028 P355NL, GH, NH; BSI 1501-224-490B LT50.
Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRA) & Stainless
For piping, heat exchangers and subsea components requiring resistance to chloride pitting.
- Duplex – S31803 (1.4462) / S32205.
Super Duplex – UNS S32750 (1.4410) and UNS S32760 (1.4501).
Sour Service & Corrosion Control – The Critical Role of HIC Steel Plate
In downstream refining and gas processing, the presence of wet hydrogen sulphide poses a unique metallurgical threat – Hydrogen-Induced Cracking (HIC) and Sulphide Stress Cracking (SSC).
Standard carbon steel plates are susceptible to blistering and stepwise cracking when atomic hydrogen diffuses into the material and becomes trapped at inclusions. To mitigate this risk and ensure asset integrity in sour-service environments, we supply CarElso HIC Premium+ and ASME SA516 HIC/ASTM A516 HIC steel plate.
Our HIC steel plate inventory ranges from 6mm to 180mm thick and is tested to the stringent requirements of NACE TM0284 and NACE MR0175/ISO 15156. This ensures the steel plate for the oil & gas industry performs reliably in separators, knock-out drums and amine units where failure would be catastrophic.
Global Supply Logistics – Supporting Fast-Track Refinery Shutdowns
In the oil and gas industry, time is a tangible cost. A refinery turnaround or a pipeline repair cannot wait for mill rolling schedules. Our service model is built around availability and precision processing.
-
Immediate Inventory
We hold the UK’s largest stock of QUARTO stainless steel plate (304L, 316L, Duplex, Super Duplex) up to 150mm thick, 3000mm wide, and 12000mm long.
